About

michelleportfolioWhen I was a child I loved back-to-school shopping.  Of course, I loved getting new clothes and couldn’t wait for the first day to show off a new outfit.  The perfect outfit for the first day of school was never the most expensive, the nicest, or the most trendy.  It was much simpler than that: it was the one that didn’t look like it was trying so hard.  Isn’t it funny how we try so hard to look like we didn’t try at all?  But I digress.  One of the things I liked most about shopping for a new school year (and I almost said the best thing, but then I again remembered how fun it was to get new clothes!) was getting new school supplies.  I loved (and still do today) the feeling of a brand new pen effortlessly flowing along the lines of a fresh piece of paper.

To say I have always liked to write is an understatement.  Ask any of my numerous childhood penpals.  What I would give now to have copies of those long letters that detailed the drama of my teen years (or lack thereof… I certainly could not compare with the likes of Serena Van der Hoosen!).  I wrote often and a lot.  Partly, because as I mentioned I loved the feel of my pen against paper.  I also loved the rythym of my fingers rattling against the keyboard.  But mostly, I loved the satisfaction of being able to put my thoughts to words.  It comes naturally.  So does talking!  But writing, well, it is just that much easier!

Who am I?  Well, apparently I am someone who needs to take up two large paragraphs to describe my love for writing.  The reality is that I am a 30-something Mom/Wife living in a small-ish city in British Columbia, Canada.  And I am lucky to make an income from doing what I love.  I am also a Professional Member of PWAC (Professional Writer’s Association of Canada).

What do I write?  A little bit of everything!  I love to read and like many writers, I have a passion and a longing to one day write a novel or script that sees the light of day.  Over the years, I have had a few short stories and poems published and have even been a finalist in a few short fiction writing contests.

Mostly, I write non-fiction including general interest topics for feature stories, news, parenting features and columns, and a local community column for our community newspaper.  I have always had an interest in lifestyle/entertainment-type articles, as well as sports (and experience too!)

Additionally, I have been working in the Online Marketing industry since 2000.  The dot-com boom was crashing, we survived, and I held a role in Corporate Communications for a small Domain Name Registration and Internet Hosting Company.  Over the years, I found a niche with content writing (you’d be surprised – - or not — how difficult it is for many companies to write the text for their websites) and Search Engine Optimization.

I love the variety that being a freelancer provides and find that this role works well with my other role as a mom and a wife.  I write/work from home and get to spend a good deal of my time with my children, wiping faces, and driving to various activities.

I also like to unwind at the end of a busy day with the television.  My favorite shows right now include Grey’s Anatomy and Gossip Girl.
